Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Deluge of Backlash Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose kindness helped save her. “You all saved me,” she said.

She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had resulted from the mission, including elevated attention for her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

Flight Details

The fully automated spacecraft departed Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.

The group of women also featured leaders in different industries.
